Customers staff clear in fake iPhone inquiry
Tuesday, 13 April 2010

AUSTRALIAN Customs has come up empty-handed after investigating an allegation staff helped move counterfeit iPhones past border controls without detection.

Australian Customs and Border Protection referred the allegation to its internal affairs division in August after it was raised in The Australian.

A Customs spokeswoman said the investigation had closed and no disciplinary action had been taken against any staff.

"Customs and Border Protection has not identified any individual/s within the organisation who are importing counterfeit iPhones," the spokeswoman said.

The agency invited members of the public to contact its integrity unit if they had information indicating that Customs agents were involved in importing counterfeit goods.

Apple declined to comment.

Early in August, The Australian reported that Apple was working with Customs to stem the flow of fake iPhones into the country. The company was acting on a tip from The Australian, which had discovered an illegal operation to sell the fake phones in Sydney pubs and to travellers at backpacker hostels.

More iPhone OS 4 Features Revealed
Sunday, 11 April 2010

Many iPhone users were excited to learn about the new features that Apple announced in iPhone OS 4. Multitasking is going to be huge (except iPhone 3G users get the shaft) and I am looking forward to it this season. Developers already have their hands on the 4.0 beta. As always, new features end being discovered by people who take the time to explore 4.0. Here are some features not mentioned in the 4.0 preview keynote:

Google branding is removed from Safari search. This is what happens when you make Steve Jobs mad. Could Bing be coming our way?

4th Gen iPhone HD to Launch June 22, have Apple chipset, 960×640 display, front-facing camera
Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Daring Fireball often blurs the line between carefully concealed wink-nudge leak and flat out facetious commentary, so with that in mind John Gruber has this to say about the 4th generation iPhone (which still won’t be called iPhone 4G!):

  • Apple A4-family system-on-a-chip. Nothing on whether that would be the ARM Cortex A9 multicore CPU with brand new PowerVR SGX GPU we’ve been drooling over, however.
  • 960×480 display. That would be bigger than even the bigger DROID Google Android phone, but fit perfectly with the mediocre pixel-doubling announced for current iPhone apps on the iPad’s 1024×768 display.
  • Front facing camera. Which would mean all those iChat Video rumors we’ve been hearing about forever would finally come true, albeit after the HTC EVO 4G broke the barrier.
  • 3rd party multitasking in iPhone 4.0. Yeah, that one we’ve got covered going way back. Which just don’t know how they’re going to implement it yet?

Again, this could just be Gruber cracking wise at the WSJ’s Verizon-rumoring expense. However, a lot of this might also be considered obvious things Apple “has to do” to stay competitive. Yet Apple hasn’t exactly been pushing the hardware specs since the iPhone 2G back in 2007. Steve Jobs was rumored to have said the next iPhone will be an A+ upgrade. Is the above a good start?

UPDATE: Engadget says they’re hearing it will launch on June 22 and be called the iPhone HD.

Location feature with Facebook to be launched next month
Sunday, 14 March 2010

Location based apps are starting to become a real hot topic with a lot of mobile phone users around the world. Apps like Foursqure, Gowalla, Google Latitude to even the smaller players like Bliin and Parallel Kingdom are becoming more and more popular as they not only incorporate a location-base check in format, but also introduce multiplayer gaming like Parallel Kingdom does.

So with that, Facebook® is set to enter the location base realm by revealing plans at next month’s developer conference.

And according to The New York Times, the new location base feature will have two things:

1. Is a feature that will be offered to Facebook® users to directly share their location info with their friends, and

2. It will incorporate APIs, meaning developers can offer their own location-based services to Facebook® users. i.e. imbedding photos from one application to Facebook®.
