Australia’s dominant telco, Telstra, has had its Yellow Pages and mapping division, Sensis, place an online job application looking for a business analyst to help it develop a “cutting-edge search application for the iPhone”. Has Telstra been sprung, and if so, will Apple be happy about it?
Uh-oh. Everybody knows how much Apple hates surprises, unless it’s Apple delivering them.
Think Secret, a blog site that leaked news of Apple’s upcoming products a couple of years back is now Dead Secret, having closed down thanks to Apple’s litigious ways.
So, if Telstra, or one of its divisions, has just effectively confirmed that Telstra will be the Australian telco to offer the iPhone, chances are that Apple will be a bit miffed about it, although if contracts are signed and sealed, there might not be much that Apple can do about it.

Apple plans to open up to three official retail stores in
Australia this year, including two Sydney stores in the CBD and in
Chatswood and another in Chadstone, Victoria.
The stores, part of an aggressive international expansion by
Apple, will become part of the company's lucrative network of about
200 retail outlets worldwide.
Apple is now putting the finishing touches on its three-level
flagship store in the Sydney CBD, which is located on the corner of
George Street and King Street.
Over the past few weeks construction workers have closed off
part of George Street at night in order to install a transparent
glass facade at the store's entrance, which will house a large and
white suspended Apple logo.
The notoriously secretive company has said only that it plans to
open a store in the Sydney CBD, and would not comment when it was
asked to confirm the development of the other two stores. While it
won't say when the CBD store will open, it is believed the covers
will come off by June.
The job opportunities page on Apple's website reveals it is
actively seeking staff for all three stores. It is believed the
Chatswood store will be located in the Chatswood Chase Shopping
Centre, while the Chadstone store will open in the Chadstone
Shopping Centre.
Apple is rumoured to be flying some of the successful job
candidates up to Apple's headquarters in California in the US for
two weeks of training, followed by two weeks working in an American
Apple store. |

Optus has an Asian telecommunications partner which has hinted that a 3G iPhone may come out to Australia and the Asian region sometime in June 2008 - and yes, perhaps with Optus. The delays at the moment are due to talks with Apple regarding the contract (with either Telstra or Optus) and the 3G features which require much more power consumption than the current iPhone. All of this, but no-one is certain when and where we can see the first official iPhone in Australia. |

Crave and Reuters reports that Apple has sent out invitations for an event on Thursday morning detailing the iPhone Software Developement Kit (SDK):"Please join us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features," Apple said in an invitation sent to reporters.
Steve Jobs had originally announced that the iPhone and iPod Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) would be released in February 2008. Last week rumors pointed to a brief delay in the launch of the SDK. The SDK will allow developers to release their own software applications for both the iPod Touch and iPhone.
Few details have been made available, but the SDK has been reportedly been seeded to select developers in the months ahead of its release. The event will take places at 10am Pacific time at Apple's Cupertino campus. |

Seems like Apple is at it once again with another firmware update. For those who haven’t found out yet, this time it’s 1.1.4, and it fixes a “few bugs” according to Apple, but does not offer any new features. This looks like it could include the code necessary for the upcoming SDK.
Also, the word on 1.1.4 is that it can be jailbroken via ZiPhone, however activation will not work. In other words, don’t bother updating to 1.1.4 if your iPhone is working fine on 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3. Zibri recommends for you to NOT to jailbreak 1.1.4 for now! This update will break your 3rd party apps! |
