Apple expected to unveil tablet at January event
Tuesday, 19 January 2010

Apple has announced it will unveil its "latest creation" in San Francisco on January 27, an event expected to feature the release of a long-awaited tablet computer.

"Please join Apple on January 27 for a special event," said a typically cryptic email invitation to journalists from the company behind the Macintosh computer, the iPod and the iPhone.

"Come see our latest creation," said the invitation.

The California-based company did not supply any further details about the event to be held at 10am local time (0500 AEDT January 28) in San Francisco.

Silicon Valley has been buzzing for months with rumours that Apple plans to release a touchscreen tablet computer that resembles an oversized iPod Touch.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the colour multimedia device will allow users to browse the web, watch movies or television shows and also serve as an electronic book and newspaper reader.

Apple routinely refuses to comment on products ahead of their release and - true to form - the company has ignored the rumours sweeping technology blogs.

The spectre of an Apple tablet, however, hovered over the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, with manufacturers of tablet computers jockeying for a head-start in the marketplace.

Computer giant Hewlett-Packard was among the companies seeking to get a jump on Apple and Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer provided a glimpse on stage of an HP "slate" computer during an appearance at the annual gadget show.

But few companies generate the buzz of Apple and a tablet computer would be the company's first major product release since it came out with the popular iPhone three years ago.

No Nexus One for Australia yet... just like the iPhone?
Sunday, 10 January 2010

Only two days after the release of Google's Nexus One phone, Americans are using eBay to turn a tidy profit by targeting Australians. This is a repeat of the first generation iPhone when it was released in the US.

American prices have been set to undercut other smartphone competitors, with Google charging US$529.99 for an unlocked handset and a subsidised US$179.99 price tag for a handset under a two-year T-Mobile contract. These prices beat both Apple's iPhone and Motorola's Droid offerings by over US$1000/year on a contract; however, Google's limited distribution plans are frustrating potential customers.

Australians looking to get their hands on the Google phone can expect to pay almost double that of their American counterparts for the time being. With eBay being one of the only avenues to buy Google's debut mobile offering, users are taking advantage, listing the Nexus One phones for up to US$1000 on eBay (USA) and up to AU$1149 on eBay Australia.

The HTC-made phone is currently available to customers in the US, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Singapore for the standard US$529.99 (not including extra shipping/tax charges). A Google Australia spokesperson told ZDNet.com.au that it currently does not have a time frame for Nexus One's release in Australia.

Facebook iPhone app gets address sync, push
Thursday, 07 January 2010

Facebook's iPhone app is one of the most popular apps for the device. Version 3.1 brings some killer features to an already strong offering. Push notifications and address book sync, new in this version, are welcome additions.

Push notifications are a very logical addition. They have become Apple's compromise for not allowing apps to run in the background. Instead of having to fire up the Facebook app all the time to see if anything is new, you can now opt to get push notifications for new messages, wall posts, friend requests, friend confirmations, photo tags, events, and comments. This is way more efficient and allows you to only access the app when there is something new to check out, if you choose.

Facebook's new contact sync for the iPhone is particularly interesting. At first, I was a bit hesitant to try out the feature, worrying that it would overwrite the data that I had or add a lot of new friends on Facebook that I didn't really want as contacts on my phone. But it didn't cause any of the problems that I had imagined. Rather, it examines the contacts that you already have on your iPhone, trying to match it to a Facebook user. If it finds a match, it pulls down that person's profile picture, making it that his or her photo on your iPhone. It also adds other information, such as a link that takes you to that person's profile in Facebook's app. The feature doesn't seem to cause any data integrity issues, it just makes your iPhone contact information more robust. Even more interestingly, if one of your phone contacts is not your Facebook friend, it will (in most cases) still pull down their info from Facebook if it finds a match.

Version 3.0 was a big jump forward for Facebook's iPhone app. Even though its creator, Joe Hewitt, has since left the project and started boycotting iPhone app development, version 3.1 delivers some really cool features that round out Facebook's offering on the iPhone nicely.

An iPhone contact, post-Facebook sync, with profile picture and Facebook link added.

8GB iPhone 3GS rumour, hackers to target iPhone in 2010, iPhone, and movies
Tuesday, 05 January 2010

The rumor of an 8GB iPhone 3GS has resurfaced. A user ordered a refurb iPhone 3G and it was delivered in packaging stating it was an 8GB iPhone 3GS.

Kapersky Lab's spokesperson has stated that he believes that in 2010 hackers will start to target the iPhone in earnest. We have seen a few attacks already, but so far, they are only aimed at jailbroken iPhones.

NBC Universal and 20th Century Fox have launched apps for the iPhone that use the mic to hear audio from DVDs and Blu-rays and pops up information about the film and extras as you watch on the iPhone.
