Original iPhone & iPhone 3G Get Video Recording!
Tuesday, 15 December 2009
Via iPhone in Canada - So check this out. Apple releases the iPhone 2G with no video recording. Soon after when the jailbreaking hacks became available, a great jailbroken app called “Cycorder” enabled video on the iPhone 2G. Users universally question Apple’s motives.

Then Apple releases the iPhone 3G and again, no video recording (Apple motives questioned again). However, jailbroken iPhones (2G/3G) could enable video recording through various applications.

Then Apple releases the iPhone 3GS and includes video recording. Now fast forward to today and the video recording has become official for the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G through an application available on the iTunes App Store called “iVideoCamera“. Users will see more apps like this ever since the Ustream app approval (which by the way is the preferred method to get video on the iPhone 3G and the app is free).

iVideoCamera further allows users to save their videos to the iPhone camera roll and share their videos using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo.

So this is great news for previous generation iPhone owners who do not want to jailbreak their device, as they can now officially download a video camera application. However, it is not all wonderful as the app comes with a few caveats:

1.) It costs $0.99. While not a big deal, it is good to note since jailbreaking is free (Cycorder) and apps like Ustream for the iPhone 3G are also free.

2.) The app captures video at approximately 3 frames a second. Yes, three (Read: not good at all).

3.) Video lengths are limited to approximately 60 seconds.

4.) Resolution is really low at 160 x 213.

So this app does enable video recording on previous generation iPhones but it is by no means better than the camera on the iPhone 3GS or the free Cycorder/Ustream applications. Although, it is worth noting that the developer of iVideoCamera has said they are working on improving the app.

This new application (as well as previously available video camera apps) does make you wonder why Apple never bothered with video recording in any of the pre-3GS iPhones and held out for three years before including the feature. In any case, users of the iPhone 2G and 3G, this is one way to get video recording on your iPhone.

Also, unless it was not obvious already, if you have an iPhone 3GS, you obviously do not need to download this application as your iPhone already has video recording.

Check out iVideoCamera in the iTunes App Store for $0.99.

Apple reveals best-selling iTunes content, iPhone apps of 2009
Thursday, 10 December 2009
Apple this week revealed the most critically acclaimed and best selling content of the year in the iTunes Store, the world's most popular online music seller and mobile application destination.

iTunes Rewind 2009 is a feature on the iTunes Store that gives a glimpse into trends for the duration of the year. Content is presented as an editorially chosen "Best of 2009," along with a list of the year's "Top Sellers."

But while Apple numbered individual songs in terms of sales rank for the year, App Store software for the iPhone and iPod touch is not as clearly defined.

Instead, the "Top Sellers" for 2009 in the App Store are divided into two sections: Games and Apps. Featured games among the top sellers are The Sims 3, The Oregon Trail, Madden NFL 10 and Flight Control. Among the top selling apps are MLB.com at Bat, Textfree Unlimited, ColorSplash and The Moron Test. None of the software listed are free downloads.

Most "Best of 2009" apps have earned at least four stars for their customer reviews. They include ReelDirector, I Am T-Pain, SketchBook Mobile and Jamie Oliver's 20 Minute Meals.

For music, the top selling single of 2009 was "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas. The iTunes editorial staff chose Michael Jackson as Artist of the Year, and the album "Only by the Night" by Kings of Leon earned Album of the Year.

Some of the year's top-selling movies were "Twilight," "Quantum of Solace," "Star Trek," and "Up." Critically acclaimed were "Drag Me to Hell," "Anvil:! The Story of Anvil" and "Sunshine Cleaning."

Also highlighted in iTunes Rewind 2009 are TV shows, podcasts and audiobooks.

In August, Apple's iTunes was found to be a quarter of all music sales in the U.S. That makes iTunes by far the largest music retailer, ahead of second-place Walmart with 14 percent. In all, digital downloads make up 35 percent of music sales, and iTunes accounts for 69 percent of online sales. But despite iTunes' popularity, CDs still remain the top-selling format, with 65 percent of overall sales.

But as the best of 2009 list implies, iTunes has become about much more than the music, particularly since the iPhone App Store opened in 2008. In November, Apple revealed that more than 100,000 applications are available for download on the App Store, a milestone reached less than a year and a half after the store's debut. And in September, the total number of downloads from the App Store topped 2 billion.

The future of iTunes could be changing even further. After Apple's purchase of music streaming service Lala last week, it has been speculated that iTunes could shift towards the browser with a cloud-based service that could let users access the content they own from anywhere, on any device.

Apple Adds Preview All Button To iTunes
Tuesday, 08 December 2009

Earlier today, or sometime within the last 48 hours, Apple has added a convenient “Preview All” button to song albums on the iTunes Music store (not on iPhone iTunes Store app).

Up until today, the iTunes Music store has allowed users to preview 30-second clips of songs, which allows users to briefly preview their purchases. While the 30-second preview is great, for entire albums it becomes a burden as users are now going through each of the usually 10+ songs tapping preview.

With the new “Preview All” button for iTunes albums, users need only press it once to preview the entire album of music at 30 seconds a preview per song. Check it out!

Telstra's lightning iPhone offer
Thursday, 03 December 2009

The nation's largest telco, Telstra, has unveiled a new iPhone plan which will see new customers getting a $100 account credit when they purchase a new plan.

First reported by The Australian Financial Review this morning and confirmed by a Telstra spokesperson, the deal is ongoing until the 26 December. The credit will automatically be applied to customers' bills.

The offer comes after Telstra's recent reshuffling of top management and overhaul of fixed line broadband plans. The telco's iPhone plans have consistently been priced significantly higher than its competitors; however, the telco's Next G network also offers an enhanced level of coverage compared with those of its rivals.

Currently Optus holds the lion's share of the iPhone market, which is set to increase, according to Optus' latest financial analysis report (PDF). Factors behind the telco's dominance include aggressive pricing and larger data allowances.

Whilst the $100 discount makes Telstra's $80, 16GB iPhone plan more competitive, Optus' equivalent plan offers 1GB of data and no upfront charge (Telstra charges $49) for a 24-month contract.

And according to Optus' website it is also currently offering a bonus $100 bill credit for new and re-contracting customers. It is not known if this offer is the first step in a new pricing strategy designed to give Telstra an edge in the market. The offer is not available to existing customers.
