Confirmed: Vodafone and Optus to sell iPhone 3GS on June 26 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 June 2009

Optus and Vodafone have confirmed they will offer the iPhone 3G S handset from June 26, leaving only Telstra to reveal its plans.

Apple revealed details of the highly-anticipated handset overnight.

The "S", it said, stands for speed, claiming the handset will be twice as fast, take videos and go on sale for somewhere around US$199 ($253) to US$299 ($380) - at least in the United States.

There has been no indication yet of how much the handset will cost in Australia.

Both Vodafone and Optus pointed users to sign up for updates on their respective web sites. Vodafone's registration process opens tomorrow.

Nathan Burley, an analyst at Ovum, said the iPhone 3G S "is further evidence of the move towards managed device platforms (MDP).

"Gone are the days where you'd just buy a device that connects to the [mobile] network and that's it," Burley told iTnews.

iPhone 3G-S set for TomTom GPS App in Oz PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 June 2009

While Apple announced a variety of new iPhone apps at the WWDC event on Monday, one of the notable additions integrates TomTom navigation. The app will provide many of the same features as standalone GPS systems, such as turn-by-turn directions, voice prompts and route planning. Users will be able to choose routes based on the fastest traffic flow in certain areas at specific times of the day.

Along with the app, TomTom will offer a line of accessories to enhance the GPS and in-vehicle functionality of the iPhone. A cradle will securely dock the iPhone, while allowing the orientation to be switched between landscape and portrait. The Car Kit also provides an external speaker to improve the volume for voice prompts, while enabling hands-free calling.

Reports of a TomTom app have existed for a year, although earlier versions of the iPhone SDK prohibited vector-based (directional) positioning that is necessary for turn-by-turn navigation assistance. The new iPhone 3GS also integrates a magnetometer which works like a digital compass, a feature that is absent from a good portion of standalone systems. Without the magnetometer, the user must begin moving before the app can calculate the heading based on point-to-point data.

The TomTom app and Car Kit will be available this summer, although pricing information has yet to be announced by any Australian carriers including Vodafone, Optus and Telstra.

iPhone 3G-S Features in Australia PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 June 2009

A new operating system for the iPhone – OS3.0 – has just been unveiled and will be pushed to devices on June 26th in Australia, with notable features including:

Find My iPhone Because it’s not exactly uncommon to misplace your phone, now you can track it down using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, allows you to remote wipe the device if it’s been stolen, and / or play a sound for locating it around the house - even while on vibrate.

TomTom GPS app TomTom navigation will be able to be integrated with the iPhone, featuring many of the same features as standalone GPS systems, such as turn-by-turn directions, voice prompts and route planning, with accessories available such as a car cradle and external speaker.

Movies on the go Now you’ll be able to rent and purchase movies from the phone, along with audiobooks.

New and improved Safari The mobile version of the web browser is claimed to run JavaScript 3x faster, and supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video. There's also AutoFill for forms, and improved HTML 5 support including audio and video tags.

Multimedia Message Service The iPhone is so far ahead of most other phones, it’s bewildering when they miss some of the basics – like the ability to send a pxt. MMS will initially be available for 29 carriers, although it’s not yet clear when it will be available in New Zealand.

Cut & Paste Users have been screaming for this functionality since the phone came out, and now it’s here. You can cut, copy, and paste words and photos, including between applications, and images and content from the web.

Internet Tethering Now you can use your iPhone as a 3G modem for your Mac or PC laptop, enabling you to surf almost anywhere, although there’s no word yet on when this will be available for Australian customers.
