@yeahright, my issue is not with Optus but with Steve Jobs. What he said in his key note was entirely misleading.

What about email in all that data... is push email included as it only states "plus a whopping 700MB of included mobile data for Mobile Internet Browsing". Email isn't internet browsing....

A bit off the topic, but who thinks that Apple is deliberately leaving out features so they can make revised generations? Come on, they easily could have made 3G the first time around, but now have got a whole generation out of it. I'm guessing that they'll be sticking in a 3.2 Megapixel or higher camera, with video in the next gen, and so on.
And each time, they'll be leaving the old users behind. A clever but cruel marketing strategy.

George, are you a representative from Optus?? Hmmm.

No, well Optus has always been garbage, perception is reality to those who perceive it. i wasn't expecting much from optus and they didn't really change my perception. Those who expected a good price were setting themselves up for disappointment. Optus is simply exerting a small degree of monopolistic power. All those people who signed up and placed a deposit sent a simple message to Optus saying i will pay more to own it now. Handset repayments will be $0 by Christmas.

Telstra is the best so far, a bonus that it is on NextG... Fast Safari! But will it be able to operate on other networks cos of the different frequencies between 3G and NextG?

I hope vodafone is better. All i want is a cap without monthly handset repayments. I dont care how much it costs upfront. Preferably on a 12 month contract cos i'll need to upgrade to iPhone (the 3rd) this time next year.

And I was criticised for celebrating when rumours started that Telstra was carrying the 3G.

This is complete shit, just what I'd expect from Optus. I can't even be bothered getting worked up, it's just so shit. I WANT DATA! DATA PEOPLE!
D A T A !
Now come on Telstra, maybe Vodafone, release a plan that kicks the shit out of this.

Alistair I think your calculations are wrong. 19 + 21 * 24 = $960 not $504. $504 only include the phone not the calls and data. You then need to add on $456 for the calls/sms and data

George, that yes plan was exactly what I was thinking was best value. I'm not a big spender on calls or texts but mobile internet is a big attraction to me. $51 a month for a 16gb iPhone with $34 credit and 500mb data will work well for me.

I did notice some interesting things in the TOS.

Excess data is charged at 0.35c per mb so not something you want to go other by much but it appears that will come from your $34 included and not just charged on-top like some other companies.

This means that if you only use $24 on calls and text you might aswell go and use an extra 60mb on data. I'll have to confirm that with an Optus rep but the TOS does state that $34 can be spent on internet.

Telstra is going to have to offer some good data plans in order to sway me. Come on Vodafone, you've seen what optus have done now beat it.

I dont see anything wrong with this pricing. If you get the $19 cap, 50 dollars of calls/text etc and 100mb of downloads on a 24 month contract, then $21 for the phone. Sounds good to me.

$504 dollars for the iphone with $ 50 of calls and 100MB is great.

Contracts don't bother me at all. I get 24 month contract plans all the time, and switch from plan to plan and from phone to phone and never pay any fees whatsoever. Good job Optus. Better than Telstra, thats for sure.

The $199 was for an iPhone on a two year contract and if you did some simple math you would see that on a $49 cap an 8gb iPhone will cost you a total of $168 before the cap, essentially less expensive than the $199US Steve Jobs stated. It was always believed and widely known that a 24 month contract was part of the subsidised price, stop making a big deal out of nothing.

Also, the plan that looks quite appealing to me is the $59 cap plus $7 a month for a 16gb iPhone. Basically $67 a month for iPhone, $350 calls and 500Mb data. works for me. I was thinking about the $49 cap but the iPhone is then $12 a month so might as well spend an extra $5 for more data.

I'm not sure on the legals of the consumer watchdog laws, what they have released may be enough, buy i GUESS, would be that yes within the next 12-24hrs they will be releasing more detailed pricing.

My guess is voda will release first thing tomorrow, they won't want to today, as optus has already stolen todays show, so they'll wait for there own piece of marketing space tomorrow.

Does that mean Telstra need to detail their prices in the next 24 hours or so as well?. I'm going to Telstra as long as the data usage is the same and $79 plan is a cap plan which I assume it is.

it is actually a promise Jobs can make. the iphone has about 3000 extra legal pages attached to it if a telco wants to sell it compared to any other phone company. Apple has, and still is dictating what the phone companies sell the phone for. all the telco's pricing has to be approved by apple before they can release it....!

Yeahright: so far as I know, the promotion of Blackberry, Palm, etc. didn't entail generating hype via misleading (i.e. false) claims about pricing.

I don't doubt or deny that the iPhone pricing is cheaper than other products, and to that extent I'm not complaining about the price.

I am, however, very critical of the distribution-retail model being applied here: why must the phones be made available only via telco retailers? I bought my iPod direct from Apple, so why not the iPhone (free from locking to any specific carrier)? What's going on here?

Well now we know: the strategy allows Apple to push the (market and brand) pressure to provide the lowest cost onto the telcos rather than having to wear it themselves. This frees up Apple to make ridiculous, false claims about prices -- to make promises that it can't keep precisely because they're not promises for Apple to make in the first place -- as part of a hype campaign.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not at all averse to making telcos wear the heat. But I'm offended by what turns out to be Jobs's false posturing about affordability, and I'm even more offended by the disingenuousness and hypocrisy shown by his expression of faith in the telcos doing "the right thing" and selling the iPhone at affordable prices.

I got no beef with you, Yeahright; it's Apple that's the target here. This is just another example of that company's increasing willingness to trade on its former image in order to cement its dominance in the market -- loyal customers be damned.

This is the best VALUE plan for post-paid 24-month contract plan for Optus iPhone 16GB CAP PLANS (for those who MAKE LOTS OF CALLS and TXTs and still want good 3G internet access)

ok, for the Optus CAP plans

best value is
$49 a month CAP and
$12 a month handset repayments for 16GB iPhone
both over 24 months

Total $61 a month over 24 months

includes:
250MB data allowance (enough for webpages, email, news, weather, maps, not much youtube)

$300 per month spend, including:

* 135 2-min calls @ $1.95 each (40c per 30 secs and 35c flagfall)
* 200 txts @ $0.25 each
* Yes time — 20 mins of FREE calls to other optus pplz after 8pm till midnight every night
* 5 min free calls to other optus phones on the same account

TOTAL over 24 months is $1464

yes, i concede that this is probably better value overall than 'yes' plans, as u get many more calls a month. and 250mb is sufficient for 75%-85% of people.

for comparison. if buy a 16gb outright for $875 AUD at Linelink Australia (www.linelink.com.au/category20_1.htm) and use 3's NEW $29 cap of $150 value and also 1GB of internet @ $15 a month (i don't know if this internet deal works with a cap, so beware), it's $1931 over 24 months for less calls but 4 times more data.

now we await vodafone (and maybe even Telstra — tho it's not as though they're gonna offer any value) to release its/their plans.

but 3! cmon, man! get a move on and announce ur release of the iPhone 3G already...

This is the best VALUE plan for post-paid 24-month contract plan for Optus iPhone 16GB (for those who don't make an excessive amount of calls and want more 3G internet access)

this is what Optus calls "Your 'yes' Plans for iPhone 3G" and is not the CAP plans

$39 a month (NOT a Cap)
$12 a month HANDSET REPAYMENTS for 16GB iPhone
TOTAL $51 per month over 24 months

INCLUDED:
$34 included calls, text (using OFFER of 'YES' TEXT & TALK):
Call rates: 18c per 30 secs with 25c flagfall.
Text rates: 18c per text
(this means $0.97 for a 2-minute call, so can have 30 2-minute calls a month and 27 texts a month to stay within $34 a month)
ALSO 500MB data allowance — more than plenty for web pages, e-mail, news, weather, maps and even some youtube

Also get 1 month free browsing if join before end of August

TOTAL price: $1224 over 24 months
