SMH: iPhone 3G users in Australia and around the world are suffering from slow internet speeds and poor reception because of a flaw in the device that may have been fixed if not for Apple's immense culture of secrecy.

A source at an Australian telco who did not wish to be named said Apple - paranoid about keeping the device under wraps - only provided the iPhone 3G to carriers the day before it went to market, leaving them with no time to test it thoroughly on their networks.

Users in Australia, Europe and the US have flooded online forums - including Apple's own discussion boards - with complaints of poor reception, slow internet speeds and dropped calls.

The poor reception - often displayed as one bar - and slow speeds are occurring in areas of good coverage and do not seem to affect other phones.

I am with Vodafone and my 3G signal strength fluctuates from 3 bars one minute to 1 bar the next...especially when I start to download data..consequently I have to change back to 2G..so annoying..

Yeh this is really annoying me! Seriousally if they are gonna sell the iphone for so much they should make it work properly on the networks!! 
 
I have so far found the iphone 3G pretty good apart from bad network coverage.

I get this Problem Majorly with optus! 
Thank god its not a problem with my phone. 
I never had low reception with 3 on a Sony Ericson's and ever since being with optus I have had 1 bar! 
Are more people getting this?

I live in a normal suburban area, and although I may get low bars a lot of the time, the speed of the 3G connection always seems to be reasonable. In "New York Times" page loading time (Jobs) I'd say it's about the standard 21 seconds. The amount of bars doesn't always reflect the speed of the connection. I get 2 bars downstairs, then 5 bars upstairs, yet the connections are equally as fast. But I definitely recommend using Wi-Fi, I'm always on Wi-Fi at home. Much more convenient.

Ben, the new firmware update included a feature which switches 3G to 2G when reception is low, I'd recommend updating your firmware.
