AustralianIT: VIRGIN Mobile Australia is the latest mobile phone provider to jump on the Apple iPhone 3G bandwagon and will start selling the popular handheld device on August 1.
According to Virgin Mobile sales staff, customers will be able to bag a 8GB iPhone 3G for $0 upfront if they sign a 24-month contract at $70 per month.
For the $70 monthly fee, customers will receive $520 worth of calls and text, and 1GB of data download capacity.
Customers can upgrade the monthly download capacity to 2GB by paying an additional $15 per month.
No details of the pricing plans for the 16GB iPhone 3G model were available but Virgin sales staff said all would be revealed on Friday.
Virgin Mobile now joins Telstra, Optus and Vodafone as the only carriers in Australia to offer the iPhone 3G. Hutchison Telecommunications still remains the only 3G carrier in Australia without an iPhone licence.
Customers can also buy the handset from Apple's Sydney retail store, although they must sign up to a monthly plan when doing so.
As a wholly owned subsidiary of Optus, Virgin Mobile’s iPhone 3G pricing plans favourably compare with the number two telco’s offering.
On the Optus $79 iPhone plan customers will receive a $0 upfront 8GB iPhone 3G with $550 worth of calls and text, and 700MB of data allowance.
In comparison Vodafone’s $69 per month iPhone plan includes $350 worth of calls and text, and 250MB worth of data downloads. Customers must also front an additional $189 for the 8GB handset under the Vodafone deal.
Telstra’s $0 upfront 8GB iPhone package comes at a monthly cost of $80 and includes $70 worth of talk and text, and $10 worth of download data a month.
