Virgin Mobile + iPhone in Australia PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 July 2008

AustralianIT: VIRGIN Mobile Australia is the latest mobile phone provider to jump on the Apple iPhone 3G bandwagon and will start selling the popular handheld device on August 1.

According to Virgin Mobile sales staff, customers will be able to bag a 8GB iPhone 3G for $0 upfront if they sign a 24-month contract at $70 per month.

For the $70 monthly fee, customers will receive $520 worth of calls and text, and 1GB of data download capacity.

Customers can upgrade the monthly download capacity to 2GB by paying an additional $15 per month.

No details of the pricing plans for the 16GB iPhone 3G model were available but Virgin sales staff said all would be revealed on Friday.

Virgin Mobile now joins Telstra, Optus and Vodafone as the only carriers in Australia to offer the iPhone 3G. Hutchison Telecommunications still remains the only 3G carrier in Australia without an iPhone licence.

Customers can also buy the handset from Apple's Sydney retail store, although they must sign up to a monthly plan when doing so.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Optus, Virgin Mobile’s iPhone 3G pricing plans favourably compare with the number two telco’s offering.

On the Optus $79 iPhone plan customers will receive a $0 upfront 8GB iPhone 3G with $550 worth of calls and text, and 700MB of data allowance.

In comparison Vodafone’s $69 per month iPhone plan includes $350 worth of calls and text, and 250MB worth of data downloads. Customers must also front an additional $189 for the 8GB handset under the Vodafone deal.

Telstra’s $0 upfront 8GB iPhone package comes at a monthly cost of $80 and includes $70 worth of talk and text, and $10 worth of download data a month.

How you've come to the conclusion that introducing what is arguably is the most popular mobile phone to ever enter the Australia Telecommunications Industry, by 3 mobile, will be the end of their business, is absolutely crazy..

I can't see anything but increased sales due to the release of the iPhone for 3 mobile & I think they'd be crazy to not want to try & see the device..

Unless of course you're arguing the other way, saying that they are going to fold now as they have not released it, however your argument is slightly unclear..

It's good to see another carrier jumping into the market with the iPhone in Virgin Mobile, however, atleast for the next 12 months until the next iPhone comes out, I don't see anybody beating out Optus's plans, as Telstra won't due to arrogance.. and Vodafone can try but don't have the reputation to do so, likewise with Virgin!

nathan, I don't think the iphone will be the end of three, and when I spoke to a 3 person on the phone before the iphone was announced on its respective carriers, I was told that they were trying very hard - but apple were wanting more money charged for the use of "air" time (im guessing thats broadband usage). I think the delima with three was not that they werent trying hard enough, its that they were trying too hard to keep a low price and apple didn't want it. I still see it being a likely possibility that three will get the iphone.

ryan, why would any one in there right mind go to three they dont even care enough about their customers to keep them updated or care that people are exiting in droves because they wont bend over far enough for apple in my opinion the iphone will be the end of three mobile in australia

I was told 1-3 weeks for my pre-paid one that i ordered yesterday through optus... and I somehow don't think its going to be the case. When I was in the shop, at least 4/5 people in there were signing up for the iphones on plans...

Tis very much gay'd
