Jess just got off the phone from Optus World in Marion, South Australia. Apparently, the opening hours for the iPhone launch is to be either at 7AM, or a midnight launch on July 11th. However, other rumours speculate that pre-registered members will receive the iPhone 2 hours before public release. Either 1. Pre-registered people get it at 7AM or midnight or 2. Pre-registered get it at 5AM or 3. Everyone gets it at 7AM/9AM or midnight. Yes, this is all to be speculated about - no official word from Optus yet.

Will Australians be the first to see the iPhone around the world? Although Apple has confirmed the iPhone to be released in New Zealand with Vodafone, we haven't heard anything yet (Vodafone hasn't made its Australian announcement either - perhaps it will be at the same time?) Note that Optus will allow people who pre-register to pick up their iPhone 2 hours before public release.
Either way, as long as Vladivostok, Suva, Chatham Island, Kamchatka Anadyr and Kiritimati don't beat us to it, Australians (and New Zealanders) will be first to see and touch the iPhone. We're expecting a few unboxing adventures to be posted before anyone else in the world gets to have it. AT&T have confirmed for a 8AM release of the 3G iPhone (which is 1AM Australian Time [Los Angeles]). This is due to long activation processes - hopefully Australians will also see the 8AM opening.
Apple just posted a guided tour for the new iPhone 3G. In the video, our old friend Bob from the original iPhone walkthrough covers "What's new in the iPhone 3G" and the iPhone 2.0 software update.
The iPhone 3G isn't due out until July 11th, but it looks like Apple is, once again, trying to start up the hype train. You can watch the video by heading over to Apple's iPhone website.
Our source within Optus revealed that it will offer a $100 per month pre paid cap plan that includes you $800 worth of calls, $100 worth of Optus 'My Time' calls, and, wait for it, a hefty 1GB of data transfers. Data costs are a huge part of the overall cost of using an iPhone so this component can have a big impact on your overall bill. It's good to see that Optus is being reasonable here. On the downside, it appears that Optus iPhones will be locked to the network, and it will cost you around $60 to $80 to unlock it.
