So you've dropped your iPhone and smashed the screen. Or made the speaker crackle. Or jammed the 'lock' button in place. Don't turn to Apple for help...
Apple Australia has confirmed that it will not be able to service first-generation iPhones in Australia, despite the fact that the iPhone 3G will officially be sold here from 11th July.
If you bought an iPhone while on holiday in the US or UK, did a cheeky hack to unlock it and then brought it back to Australia, you probably didn't expect too much service from Apple Australia. But you might have held out a glimmer of hope that once the iPhone was officially sold here, you could get paid-for repairs done on your phone by Apple in the future.
No suck luck, according to Apple Australia spokesperson Fiona Martin. If "the iPhone you have is not available in Australia, repairs will not be available in the Apple Store Sydney," she told APC. (Or anywhere else, we assume... unless this suggests that Apple Store Sydney will be Mecca for ailing iPhones around Australia.)
Just as the prohibition of iPhones in this country fostered a burgeoning black market for hacked iPhone sales, Apple's refusal to offer repairs for imported iPhones has created an opportunity for third parties who can do the job for you.

If Internet searches are anything to go by, then the iPhone 3G is going to be a smash hit when it goes on sale in Australia on July 11. New search data shows that Australian searches for the word 'iphone' have skyrocketed over the second quarter of 2008.
Searches for 'iphone' by Australian Internet users increased by 95 percent between the weeks ending April 5, 2008 and June 7, 2008, according to Hitwise Australia. No wonder the media has been giving Apple's latest handset so much attention.
An amazing 5000-plus variations on the search expression were seen during the four weeks leading up to 11 June, including 'iphone australia', '3g iphone', 'iphone review', 'vodafone iphone' and 'iphone optus'.

Yet another update to the iPhone firmware 2.0 and the SDK have leaked out. The new firmware has been dubbed 5a308. This build was released today, along with a fresh build of the SDK. The new SDK is 1221.8MB, so it is a little bigger than the last release, which was the fifth such release. It is not known yet if this is the firmware beta that adds the rumored geo tagging features.

The firmware is fresh off the server, and the details about it are few. What we do know right now is that the new SDK requires developers to register an application ID, suggesting that they are tightening things up in anticipation of the launch, which is rumored to be soon. Application IDs are required for provisioning now, all previous provisioning is now longer valid.
Another interesting thing is you must be running OSX 10.5.3, which was just released this morning. It is odd that Apple would cut off the still large amount of users running Tiger, or 10.4. The new updates release notes were uploaded to Apple’s site earlier, and can be viewed now. Apple also removed six demo applications from the SDK package.

According to one source claiming to have been tipped by sources close to the 3G iPhone, the device will in fact be announced on June 9th at WWDC. Then, immediately after, the device is expected to be unleashed to the waiting masses. The launch will be a worldwide launch, as opposed to the original launch, where it started in the U.S. and made its way to other countries later.

According to the article it will not take long, as the device will be available in Spain as early as June 18th. The launch schedule is very interesting, starting with a single Apple Store, and a single Telefonica store. Then within 24 hours the device will make country wide launch. According to the article, this is the same launch scheme that will be used all across Europe.
According to this articles “reliable sources” the device will not be sold at fixed price points in Europe. This means basically carriers are free to sell the device at whatever price they feel. This means that if we are lucky, then the new iPhone will indeed carry a subsidy. This is especially necessary in Europe, where the carriers are ultra competitive with one another.
