Apple Sells 1 Million iPhones But Only A Few In Australia
Page 2
SmartHouse: Apple today announced it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on Friday, 11 July. iPhone 3G is now available in 21 countries including Australia. However stock limitations resulted in only 80,000 going on sale in Australia.

The official Apple statement said "iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."

The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone plus 3G networking, built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs over 800 third party applications available through the new App Store.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

"seems strange that Apple had a huge lead in time to get stocks organised and yet a lot of stores where we are only got a few"

It's called planned scarcity. Helps generate hysteria (riots in the street as people fight to get one), hence hype, which in turn generates interest and increased sales.

Strange, but I can't believe that I've only had my iPhone for less than a week. Got it on launch day, yet it feels like I've been using it for weeks.

We placed our order Friday, and they have rung us this afternoon to say our iPhones are in ready to be picked up, so we are heading down there tonight....late night shopping. So hang in there, I'm sure they will be here soon. We are looking forward to playing with ours tonight.

@Mark.

I KNOW! I ordered one on monday (Not quite as long as you) and they practically promised they would be here by wednesday.

Wednesday came. Went. And now it's thursday. I rang up, and they said they were expecting them today, and they'd call...

No call.

I leave this area on friday afternoon for two weeks...

ARGH!

Has onyone that placed an order with Optus last Friday actually received stock?. Our local store was expecting a delivery yesterday. It never came. Now they expect it today but still hasn't arrived. Getting worried. :cry

you know whats really getting on my nerves...

i rainchecked an iphone on friday 11th, called them up today and asked them if theyve sent off the orders yet, and the sales rep said that they'd rather wait til they get enough orders then send it off for back orders to save on postage costs. And worst of all he doesnt know when that will be.

oh yeah - one rather interesting thing i did learn. While i wait for my number to be ported over, I threw my Virgin SIM in for a giggle. Turns out it is working just fine on the Optus 'locked' phone aside from no data on my bean counter pre-paid. Might've have opened some options buying the phone out up-front if i'd known earlier....

Have heard rumour that virgin will get iphone in next 2 weeks and offer better deal than other carriers. Might just wait.

Bought my iPhone with Optus yesterday at our local store, four hours north of sydney (Getting 3G next month) and was told that they will be getting a shipment per week...

Why is this not cement in all stores, particularly stores not as far out as Taree...

I have to wonder.

Am looking forward though! :D:D:D Cannot wait.

I signed up Saturday for a 16gb at Allphones. They are awaiting stock, did not get any on the release date at all, maybe Friday this week. I suspect the covers I ordered will get to me before the phone...seems strange that Apple had a huge lead in time to get stocks organised and yet a lot of stores where we are only got a few...patience is a virtue so they say :zzz

If you'd have told me a year ago that i'd spend 5 hours in a queue for a phone, i would've called you crazy. I did just that yesterday at the Sydney Apple store and now have a very sexy 16Gb black iPod. So unbelievably totally worth it too!

What was funny for me at least - the five hour queue was to join any Optus plan. If you felt like being taken advantage of by Telstra or Vodafone, you could've walked in and had one straight away even though the stores across the street had sold out. Optus must be making a killing!

Maybe they would have gotten more sales if they actually shipped the phones out to the stores. :(

(Still waiting for optus to ship in the iPhone I pre-ordered and payed for. Was forth in queue too.)

I tried to put my name down on the waiting list for a pre-paid Optus phone. They didn't want to know about it, said they had way too many orders (20+) and had no idea when they were ever going to get any in.
In fact the woman said "I can't put you on the waiting list, but you can leave your name with us."
Not sure I follow that.
