Where the First Million iPhones Were Sold PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 07 August 2008
iPhone Buzz: In case you ever wondered how iPhone 3G sales have been distributed across the globe, a recent study conducted by Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research shows just where the first million went.

As expected, the U.S., Japan, Germany and France topped the curve, taking in a cumulative 81% of the first million 3G iPhones sold. But this isn't really news.

What is interesting, however, is the dispersal of carriers. And though AT&T tops the list with 600,000 units sold, T-Mobile sold 89,000, Orange sold 77,000 and Softbank Mobile sold 70,000 in the overseas market.

Even though the iPhone is a U.S. dominated product at the moment, it still has a large resonance overseas. This data reflects only the first three days of sales, so it may be affected by the initial troubles people had registering.

I'm not sure that per capita would make too much difference. I imagine they allocate stock based on per capita anyway.

Doing the maths, US works out to 0.005 while Aus works out to 0.00045. So roughly 1 in 1000 yanks have one, while only 1 in 10,000 Aussies have one.

Though I agree, if we could get the stock, things would probably be different but I imagine that's the same everywhere.

@Tim, I've also been waiting for launch for my pre-paid 16gb. I've heard they may not appear to November, but I continue to wait. I've been told by a Telstra employee that there's rumors that Telstra will start selling outright in the next week or two. Apparently when they start advertising business plans they'll also be selling outright. (This is in WA, but presumably holds true everywhere)

Here's hoping I get one before the end of the month when Apple launches in another 20 countries and have even higher demand vs supply...

It doesn't help that some people are still waiting on iPhones in Australia. I have been waiting on my prepaid iPhone since day 1!

Yeah, take it in to a per-capita perspective and amount of units actually available in each country, im sure we'd be up there.

@Macca
what would be much more interesting is a graph showing x1000 units sold *per capita*. We iz but 20M after all -- tiny country!
