LEAKED: Outright iPhone 3G pricing for Australia PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 June 2008

A screenshot of a point of sale system from Apple retailer Domayne shows what may be the outright pricing for the iPhone 3G.

And so begins the month long guessing game till the introduction of the iPhone 3G launch.

Luckily for us Australians, the launch is on July 11th. You should register your interest with Optus and Vodafone to make sure you get your hands on one as soon as possible.

But what about if you've just recently signed up on a plan, and won't be out of contract for another year or so? Would you be interested in buying an unlocked, off-contract iPhone? Is that a 'yes' I hear you say? Well, so would I.

While nothing has been confirmed by Apple, Optus or Vodafone, there are a number of sources that suggest an unlocked, off-contract iPhone 3G may be available.

The first tantalising rumor comes from a screen shot here, which suggests an unlocked 8GB iPhone 3G will cost $699.99. If you want to step up to a 16GB version you'll be up for $999.99. The shot also lists model numbers (MB666P/A) however a Google search brings up a discussion thread on MacTalk Forums. There's also a good chance the screenshot is fake, and the model numbers are simply place holders - the '666' reference may just be a placeholder - or a joke by the person fabricating the screenshot indicating that the iPhone 3G is the devilphone. Who knows!

Update: Optus iPhone Pricing Details 'Wrong'
Gizmodo has received an angry phonecall from Optus about this story. They were told, in no uncertain terms, that the pricing tip received was "wrong". No more information was given, other than the fact that the story was incorrect.

The biggest question on everyone's lips now that the iPhone has been announced in Australia is how much it's going to cost you. Well, a friendly tipster has stealthily procured those details and sent them through to Giz AU. Thanks Tipster!

So, if you're an Optus customer, here's what you can expect:
scancrop2.jpg
  • *The iPhone is only available on a 24 month contract - you can't purchase it outright
  • *The 8GB model will cost $220, the 16GB $330
  • *Only the 16GB is available in white
  • *Optus won't be selling accessories - they will be sold through the Apple store
  • *There will be two plans available: a $79 cap with 1GB data and $300 worth of calls; and a $99 cap with 3GB of data and $400 worth of calls
  • *Both plans include Visual Voicemail
  • *30c flagfall; 35c per 30 seconds talk, 25c SMS messages
Now, as with any tip, this isn't 100 percent confirmed yet - I'll be chasing up with Optus in the morning to get confirmation. But the source seems legit from my end, and the pricing all sounds about what I was expecting.

What do you guys think? Is $79 for 1GB worth of data good enough value for money for a portable internet device?

Gizmodo confirms 3G iPhone launch date? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 May 2008
Gizmodo US says a source ‘very, very close to’ Apple confirms what we’re all already expecting. What’s that? The 3G iPhone, available to buy, worldwide, bang on June 9 – right after the launch.

With just over two weeks to go before Steve Jobs strides upon the stage at the Moscone Convention Center for his WWDC keynote speech where he is expected to unveil the iPhone 2, aka the 3G iPhone, the big question has been: when will the 3G iPhone actually go on sale?

Although some have predicted it might not arrive until later in the year, the unavailability of the iPhone from the US Apple store truly signals only one thing: the 3G iPhone will go on sale from June 9 in the US, or so says Gizmodo US, which for countries like Australia means June 10 thanks to time zone differences.

One reason for sales to happen immediately, aside from the fact everyone’s busting to see what it looks like and either upgrade to the 3G goodness or finally buy one because it has reached version 2.0 at last is so that Apple can book massive day one sales in the second quarter to make up for the fact first-generation iPhones have been ‘unavailable’.

3G iPhone to come in three color choices? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 May 2008
In a report published earlier suggests that the 3G iPhone could come in more than one color. These colors include white, black, and silver. The report also claims that Apple partner Swisscom has already set their usage prices for 3G and and SMS usage for the new device. The report clearly states it is speculation, so it should be taken as such.

According to the report one of the first carriers to get the new iPhone will be Swisscom, which would explain the early preparation. The rumor continues to speculate that there will be a 32GB version of the iPhone, whats more they even have some rumored price points. The 16GB 3G iPhone will sell for $627, and the 32GB 3G iPhone for $760. Again, this is not confirmed.

According to the report, the 16GB model will only be available in silver. The 32GB color will come in white, black, and silver. This is perhaps an incentive for subscriber to purchase the more expensive model. The new iPhone will be on sale in 118 Swisscom shops, and in Apple stores, including Geneva and Zurich. According to the report, the device will ship in June.
