8GB iPhone 3GS rumour, hackers to target iPhone in 2010, iPhone, and movies PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 January 2010

The rumor of an 8GB iPhone 3GS has resurfaced. A user ordered a refurb iPhone 3G and it was delivered in packaging stating it was an 8GB iPhone 3GS.

Kapersky Lab's spokesperson has stated that he believes that in 2010 hackers will start to target the iPhone in earnest. We have seen a few attacks already, but so far, they are only aimed at jailbroken iPhones.

NBC Universal and 20th Century Fox have launched apps for the iPhone that use the mic to hear audio from DVDs and Blu-rays and pops up information about the film and extras as you watch on the iPhone.

iPhone Firmware 3.1.3 leaked? OS 4.0 soon after? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Whoa, whoa, whoa! What is this? 3.1.3? 4.0!

So it seems that the folks over at BGR have found some evidence referencing iPhone OS 3.1.3 and 4.0. The indications were located in browser logs and seem legitimate. Check out the image below towards the top left corner.

Now, while this looks legitimate, it is very hard to confirm since these logs can be faked. There are a few browser add-ons out there that allow users to essentially input any textual data into the “user agent” fields. So take this find with a grain of salt.

With that being said, it is not hard to believe that Apple may eventually release 3.1.3 firmware, as the release would be a minor fix, mostly focusing on bug fixes and light enhancements. A 4.0 release on the other hand will be a major jump with a lot of newly added features, similar to what was experienced when OS 3.0 was released.

Maybe we can expect a 3.1.3 release sometime in January 2010?

Black Friday 2009 deals are everywhere online and now Apple has jumped onto the retailer’s haven bandwagon with its TGI Apple Black Friday 2009 specials.

The Apple Black Friday 2009 Ad Flyer has been leaked online to BoyGeniusReport and according to the source, online shoppers are in for great deals.

The flyer shows that MacBook Pros start as low as $1,098, iPod touch from $178, iPod nanos from $138, Apple TVs starting at $208 and iMacs starting at $1098. These prices sound great, although Apple has not yet released its official Apple Black Friday 2009 flyer ad so we will just have to wait and see.

Apple's One Day Special will be on Nov. 27th, the Friday after Thanksgiving.

According to Apple's TGI Black Friday site, Black Friday deals will only be available on Apple’s Online store, not at retail stores.

Rumour: Smaller iPhone on tap for Verizon in Q3 2010? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 08 November 2009
If you're tired of dropped calls and dead zones, and pondering the merits of turning in your iPhone for a DROID... hold on there, champ. AppleInsider says it's received a copy of a report by OTR Global, claiming that Apple has signed contracts to produce a UMTS / CDMA hybrid iPhone to be released in the third quarter of 2010.

The hybrid handset, built around a dual-system chip from Qualcomm, would allow the iPhone to run on virtually any GSM/UTMS cellular network worldwide -- and also on the CDMA2000 networks of US carriers like Verizon and Sprint. In particular, Verizon is cited in the report as the target carrier for the new devices.

The report states that Foxconn, the Taiwan-based sole-source provider of iPhone hardware at this time, will not build the new device. Instead, a subsidiary of Asustek known as Pegatron has been selected to kick off manufacturing. It's also rumored that the hybrid device uses a 2.8" screen, making the handset smaller than the current model which uses a 3.5" display.

Photos of the smaller display were first featured on iLounge in June of 2008 (see photo at right), sparking widespread rumors at the time that an "iPhone nano" was on the way. Over a year later, neither the smaller iPhone nor a Verizon model are available. However, if the leaked report is any indication, 2010 could be yet another year of incredible growth for the iPhone economy.

Google Working on Free [Ad Supported] Turn-by-Turn Navigation App? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 October 2009

Google already provides the free Google Maps service (with Street View, pictured above), but could they be planning to step up to full on turn-by-turn navigation? Forbes thinks so:

Google, which generally gives its software away for free and recoups its investment through advertising, would likely sell ads within the navigation application rather than charge users, experts say. The ads could be particularly valuable because the program would know users’ precise locations and destinations, allowing advertisers to pinpoint specific kinds of consumers. Google recently started running sponsored link ads in Apple’s ( AAPL – news – people ) iPhone map application, which it helped build.

Forbes cites competitors who think Google will enter the “small but lucrative” space, and it would be a great value-add to Android, extending Google’s control over the software to an area some carriers still want all to themselves (with the monthly subscription feeds that go with it).

Before international readers get too excited, however, like Google Voice, it might be US-only, especially at first. That, and other factors have potential competitors already getting their shots in:

“Millions of customers use our service because of its reliability, ease of use and additional features,” [Mary Beth Lowell of TeleNav] says. [Steve Andler of Networks in Motion] contends the mobile market is different from the Internet, where “everything’s free and always in beta. People are willing to pay a premium to have something work all the time on their phones.”

Translation: they won’t try to compete with Google on price.

But what about you? Would you let Google monitor your GPS coordinates and activities, and send you targeted ads, in exchange for free navigation?
