Official: Telstra Staff 3G S Bridging Module Booklet PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 21 June 2009
We've been sent this Telstra 3G S booklet reserved for internal staff training in regards to the 3G S release next week. A few highlights include:
  • The two new devices will be available on the current iPhone Phone Plans, Phone Plan Ultimate and Consumer Next G/3GCap Plans.
  • This device will be able to be updated with iPhone OS 3.0 software. It will also move to EOL from June onwards. It will remain on handset schedules until all remaining stock is sold as per the standard EOL process.
  • Visual Voice Mail - This product is not available
  • The device comes as a “bricked” device. This means the device will not work until it is tethered to iTunes. The iPhone Plan, Phone Plan Ultimate, Consumer NextG/3G Cap Plans, can be connected but the device will not be functional until it is tethered the device to iTunes.
  • The cost of the iPhone to the customer is different depending on the plan level and which iPhone device the customer selects; current iPhone 3G 8GB, iPhone 3G S 16GB or iPhone 3G S 32GB. The upfront payment is charged on the first bill as a lump sum.
  • If a customer wants to unlock a device that they have purchased out-right and is not on an iPhone Plan, Phone Plan Ultimate, Consumer NextG/3G Cap Plans contract they will need to pay a fee of $150.

Telstra (Australia) charging upto $2000 per GB for 3G data PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 17 October 2008
iPhone Matters: Do not adjust your monitor, that figure is correct. Not for all customers fortunately, just those on pre-paid and casual data rates.

Looking at that figures seems ridiculous, but follow along and do the maths with me (ok, that’s math for some of you).

The casual data access charge for pre-paid customers on a 3G phone (such as an iPhone) is AU$2.20/MB (GST included). That doesn’t sound so bad, right? Until you recall that there’s 1024MB to the GB. So simple maths gives us 1024 * 2.2 = AU$2,252.80/GB. Ouch!!

It’s worse though if you only have a 2G phone, as the casual rate for 2G pre-paid phone is $22/MB, that is, a massive AU$22,528/GB!!!!!!!! No amount of exclamation marks is sufficient.

So all that looks rather bad, but (relatively speaking), if you purchase Browsing Packs (a data pack with set limits), you can get your data massively cheaper. For example, a 1GB data Browsing Pack costs AU$89 (valid for one month), that is, one 25th of the price of the casual rate.

However, the low end rates for Browser Packs are pretty ordinary though: $5 for 5MB; $10 for 20MB; and $29 for 80MB. Compared to those on plan phones, who get 150MB for $10, and 300MB for $29 (the excess rate is half that of the $10 plan), and you see that pre-paid users are getting shafted.

Telstra systems down PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 July 2008
Thanks Elliot for sending this in...

Telstra's registering and activation has crashed this morning, meaning customers have had to sign up by paper. All customers will be signed up as soon as the system is back online and are being allocated iPhones. Customers are now leaving stores empty-handed, with the promise of being able to pick their iPhone 3G up as soon as the system is back online.

LEAKED: Telstra iPhone Plans PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 July 2008
Leaked Telstra iPhone plans show the biggest Telco in the land intends to milk iPhone customers for all they can.

While still unofficial, Telstra plans, scanned from a shop staff training pack, have shown up at the Australian Mac user site MacTalk. The news, it seems, isn't good. In fact, for most non-business, non-high end customers they are just plain bad.

Details are still incomplete, but according to the Telstra only higher end plans come with enough data to be considered reasonable. For instance, a monthly spend of $89 nets you 200MB of included data, but stepping down to a $59 plan reduces that down to 80MB.

If the document is to be believed, the plans are also broken up in two tables for each of the different model iPhones - something that could indicate different pricing for a 12 versus 24 month contract. However, if that's the case, Telstra's cheapest cap plan is $105 per month, a full $86 more expensive than the cheapest Optus plan.
